WHAT DOES MY PET NEED TO ACCESS PPP SERVICES?

  • Free of ticks and fleas

  • In good health

  • Dog and people friendly

  • Flea and tick collars are not permitted

Cats

  • Must be at least four (4) months old

  • Free of ticks and fleas

  • In good health

  • People friendly

  • Flea and tick collars are not permitted

  • Must be in crate when entering/exiting the facility

WHAT VACCINATIONS ARE REQUIRED?

To keep all pets safe, PPP requires proof of the following vaccinations to be administered at least ten (10) days before entering PPP facilities:

Dogs

  • Rabies

  • Distemper

  • Bordetella

Cats

  • Rabies

  • Feline Leukemia

  • FVRCP

PPP requires the Bordetella vaccination because kennel cough is so prevalent in boarding facilities. The Bordetella vaccination can be provided as an injectable vaccination, intranasal vaccination, or oral vaccination and protects against the most common form of kennel cough: Bordetella bronchiseptica.

Kennel cough/canine cough/Bordetella is a highly contagious upper-respiratory illness equivalent to a cold and comes in different strains. Just like when you send your child to school or daycare, there is a possibility that illness can be contracted – especially during cold season – even if vaccinated. It is important to understand that the Bordetella vaccination is meant to help prevent dogs from contracting a form of kennel cough, but it is not guaranteed, and will not protect against all forms of kennel cough.

Boarding facilities, daycares, shelters, dog parks, and dog shows commonly experience kennel cough outbreaks especially during peak seasons (spring and summer) where large numbers of dogs are congregating. Kennel cough typically resolves on its own without medical treatment in ten (10) to fourteen (14) days according to the American Kennel Club (AKC).

PPP works to prevent kennel cough outbreaks by requiring all dogs to be vaccinated as well as utilizing strict cleaning policies. If a dog exhibits symptoms that suggest possible kennel cough upon entry, the dog will not be admitted into services. If a dog exhibits symptoms while being boarded, the dog is immediately placed into isolation. All bedding, toys, and dishes used by the dog are cleaned and sanitized, and the owner is contacted to discuss next steps.

If an owner reports that their dog is exhibiting symptoms of kennel cough or has a diagnosis of kennel cough from a veterinarian after their boarding stay, PPP will perform mapping to identify all dogs who may have been exposed to the illness, observe, and document any health changes in current boarding dogs, and inform the owners of current and incoming boarding dogs of potential exposure.

HOW DO I CHANGE OR CANCEL MY RESERVATION?

If you need to reschedule, please update your reservation online or call and leave a voicemail at (253) 858-4240 or email petservices@prisonpetpartnership.org.

PPP requires a notice of three (3) business days to cancel a boarding reservation.

Premium dates: All federal holidays (including holiday weekends) require a notice of five (5) days to cancel a reservation.

If the required 3-5 cancellation notice for boarding is not provided, a $100 cancelation fee will be applied.

WHERE AND WHEN DO I PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF MY PET?

PPP services operate within the Washington Corrections Center for Women; therefore, PPP is subject to policies and procedures outlined by the Department of Corrections.

  • If you need to have a person other than who is listed on your application pick up your pet, please let us know as soon as possible. If policy is not followed, this may result in PPP keeping your pet until an approved person can pick them up - which may incur additional fees.

  • Due to COVID mandates, outside visitors are not permitted to enter the facility at this time. PPP will coordinate a drop-off and pick-up time. When you arrive, please park in the lot, and bring your dog on-leash or cat in a crate to the grassy area to the left of the entrance of WCCW - marked by a yellow fire hydrant in front of Y Building - and wait until PPP staff greet you. Similarly, if you are picking up your pet, you must wait in the grassy area.

  • Do not enter the building. Officers cannot permit entry to non-DOC individuals.

  • Please note, pets are not allowed to relieve themselves in the flower beds. The grassy area with the yellow fire hydrant is the only designated relief-area. Please pick up after your pet. There are no waste bins available, and all waste must be taken with you for disposal.

Please be punctual. It is equally important that you collect your pet at the scheduled pick-up time. If you will be late, please call (253) 858-4240.
