Prison Pet Partnership's vocational education programming includes dog training. This provides an opportunity for the community to access training services for their dogs while Program Participants (Incarcerated Individuals) earn certification as Dog Handlers.

PPP's training philosophy creates a human-animal relationship built on positive interaction and consistency that can often deter unwanted behavior problems, facilitate faster learning, and even solve some existing behavioral challenges.

Training Staff and Program Participants use positive reinforcement training techniques that include food, toys, clickers, and praise. PPP does not use aversive methods and does not condone discipline of any kind to correct problematic behaviors.

  • To be considered for PPP’s Board and Train program, your dog is required to board with PPP for at least three consecutive days for behavioral assessment by Training Staff.

While a dog may be assessed in a thirty to sixty minute session, PPP prefers the opportunity to work with your dog in a boarding setting. Dogs entering new environments may be nervous or even fearful and it can take them a few days to acclimate and display their baseline behaviors without the presence of their owners. The three-day boarding stay is not required if your dog has boarded with PPP since January 2023.

  • Dogs with extreme behavioral challenges require very specific environments that PPP is not equipped to provide due to the prison setting. If your dog experiences extreme fear, or is extremely dog or human reactive, PPP’s Board and Train Program is not suitable for your dog.

TEENS AND ADULTS

Adolescent dogs have more energy and stronger emotions than puppies and adult dogs. They tend to lean toward independence and need more exercise, more mental stimulation, and more attention. Teen dogs require training more than any other age group!

As for adult dogs, it’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks!

Training Staff will develop a training plan with specific commands and behavior modifications based on behaviors and desired outcomes for teen and adult dogs.

No. Unfortunately, PPP is unable to crate train.

CAN PPP TEACH MY DOG TO STOP JUMPING ON PEOPLE?

Yes - with your help! PPP can provide training in polite greetings; however, training must be reinforced by each individual approaching the dog.

MY DOG IS SHOWING SIGNS OF AGGRESSION. CAN PPP HELP?

Maybe. Aggressive behaviors include growling, pinning ears, snapping, and baring teeth. This may be observed when reaching for your dog's food or toys, when your dog sees another dog, or when unfamiliar people approach your dog.

PPP assesses aggressive behaviors to determine whether a dog is a good fit for the board and train program. If a dog is not a good fit, PPP will recommend the owner identify a behavior specialist to work with their dog.

MY DOG STRUGGLES DURING GROOMING. CAN PPP HELP?

Maybe. PPP can provide training in the bathtub and on the groom table around groom-specific tools such as nail clippers, trimmers, and blow-dryers. Dogs that are extremely fearful or stressed during grooming may not be good candidates. If you are interested in groom training, but are unsure if your dog would be a good candidate, contact us at petservices@prisonpetpartnership.org.

CAN PPP TRAIN MY DOG TO BE A SERVICE, FACILITY, OR THERAPY DOG?

Unfortunately, PPP does not train community pets to be service, facility, or therapy animals. Training is only provided to dogs PPP identifies in shelters or as purpose-bred puppies. However, if you would like to apply for a service, facility, or therapy dog, check out PPP's Placement and Adoption.
